Building your own computer and GAME FREEZES!
I put together my computer this weekend, that was exciting enough, the bonus being it worked, first time… I must have done something wrong. Nothing is this easy.
The specs for my machine are:
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2.0Ghz dual core)
- 1GB Corsair DDR2 800Mhz RAM
- 250GB + 350GB SATA2 7200rpm HDD (chained)
- CoolerMaster iGreen PSU 600W
- ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard
- NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT (256MB)
- Dell 2007FP 20″ UltraSharp Widescreen (1680×1050 native)
In time I’ll break some of the parts out and build a server and personal machine, dropping back to a single 3.0Ghz+ CPU for gaming.
I did some research into why games were freezing, a common issue being inadequate cooling. I’ll add an additional rear-fan (Gigabyte DC brushless fan 1800rpm), upgrade the provided heat-sink (AMD) as well as reapply thermal paste. I hope this will fix it.
Woot, new PC!

Sounds good - the real question is how much did it set you back?
Ever heard of Amway? Cheaper and delivered groceries - as well as heaps of other stuff. I’ve registered, if you’re interested, let me know, yeah? It’s pretty cool.

Lock ups were caused by a dodge GeForce 7600 GT, returning it tomorrow and swapping it out for a better model.
Grant total will have come to just under $2000 all up after this graphics card exchange.

Seems my GeForce 7600 GT was replaced - my woes continued however - after contacting ASUS support detailing my issue I was adviced to remove the IDE driver, install a beta audio driver and drop the PEG Link to “Slower”.
I’ll know tomorrow if this fixes it.

The issue is resolved, faulty Samsung memory on the Albatron nVidia GeForce 7600 GT 256MB PCI-E was to blame. Now using a ASUS nVidia GeForce 7900GS 256MB PCI-E card running at performance levels without a hitch.

Visser this is a nice setup you have here but I would like to know more about the 7600gt you were using. I currently am using a BFG Nvidia Geforce 700gt 256mb GDDR ram and it too freezes during gameplay. I have upgraded drivers,PSU and it stays at about 56-75′c during gameplay. I would really not like to have to get a different card as i just got it recently and I am not Richie-Rich.
Any advice and more detailed specs as to which 7600gt you used would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Redleprechaun, we’re both in the same ‘not rich’ bag. I had originally purchased an Albatron NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT (256MB), retailed less than $300 AUD at time of purchase. Take it back, it’s not worth spending time fixing something that is faulty. Allow them to play a memory intensive game and experience the issue; nick named the Billy Hill effect.
Typically game play in Half Life 2 or F.E.A.R. - regardless of performance settings - would last under five minutes before all system activity ceased, this would cause an audible sound loop from the speakers and lock up the system, after 10-20 seconds on average the system would become responsive before shortly after looping again, from then on the loop would be more frequent, every 2-3 minutes, again lasting 10-20 seconds. Game play is impossible with these loops. If you put it the system through its paces long enough it would eventually cold reboot.
Running Futuremark’s 3DMark 2007 in my case didn’t cause it to lock up like in games but it did show dramatic rendering performance issues.
I had tried everything to resolve this issue, including:
- reinstalling Windows several times incase of driver conflict (operating system)
- updating to the latest system drivers; Direct X drivers, motherboard drivers, including separate sound-card which were suspected in causing performance issues
- applying all available updates from Windows Update
- rolling back to earlier releases of nVidia driver packs
- installing unofficial nVidia driver packs
- applying all Windows XP/AMD Dual-Core software fixes; AMD Dual Core Optimizer, AMD Dual-Core driver, Microsoft update KB896256 v4 (mirror link to v3),
- applying copious memory/performance Windows registry fixes
- disabling Windows hardware graphic acceleration
- adjusting motherboard memory management settings
Here are several resources you may wish you pass onto a technician or sales person when claiming your refund, good luck and let me know how it turns out.

Thanks for your insight visser. I am still under the 30 day full refund warranty at futureshop so i am going to go get a BFG 7900 gs oc 256mb gddr from them. Now that I did some more research on the 7600 gt that i have, i wish i had seen it before and i NEVER would have purchased it. Did alot of checking up on the 7900gs and it seems like a great card and very stable too for 340$ (can) but this card should last me quite some time hopefully. I spent hours googling trying to figure out what was wrong and You have been a great help clearing things up for me .
Thank you!

Hi Chris,
That’s a great article, have you purchased the Albatron 7600GT 256MB? How did it go for you?
