Windows Vista network share on Ubuntu Intrepid

Previous readers will know that I’m using Ubuntu Intrepid, a first-time Linux home user, and I love it! If you’re a first-time reader, now you know too!

I want to be able to access my music library stored on my Windows Vista machine using my wireless connection within Ubuntu, to do this I had to connect my Windows Vista network share as a new network volume on Ubuntu Intrepid.

Here are the steps:

  1. Ensure you can access the Windows Vista network share from another Windows network machine
  2. Select “Connect to server…” from the Places system drop-down
  3. Change the Service type to Windows share
  4. Set the Server name to the machine name of your computer (e.g. VISSER)
  5. Set the Share field to the exact name of your Windows Vista network share (e.g. music)
  6. I left the Folder field empty as I didn’t need to start deeper, if you connect to your root hard drive (e.g. C:\ or D:\) then this may need to be filled
  7. Set the User Name to the user name you use to log onto your Windows Vista machine (this can be avoided by proper network share permissions, ideas?)
  8. I left the Domain field empty as I’m on a home workgroup
  9. Press Connect to connect to your Windows Vista machine
  10. You may be prompted for a password and to confirm your Workgroup, use the recommended options

You now can play music or other media on your Ubuntu Intrepid machine by loading files from your Windows Vista machine connected to the network.
