Azureus Vuze on Ubuntu Intrepid

I’m a first time Ubuntu user and want to share my experience of how to install the Bittorent client Azureus Vuze on the popular Linux distribution Ubuntu: 8.1 (Intrepid).

I cover setting iinet’s FTP server as the default Software Source in Ubuntu in a related article.

  1. Open a Terminal session from the Applications > Accessories system drop-down
  2. Send the command ’sudo apt-get install azureus’, confirm your Administrator password if prompted
  3. When prompted, press ‘y’ to being installing Azureus
  4. Send the command ’sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre’, confirm your Administrator password if prompted
  5. When prompted, press ‘y’ to being installing Java 6 JRE
  6. You will need to accept the Sun Java EULA to install Java 6 JRE
  7. Send the command ’sudo update-alternatives –config java’
  8. Select the entry with ‘/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java’ in the Alternative column, by default this is 2
  9. Configure your  TCP/UDP port forwarding on your ADSL router
  10. Open Azureus Vuze from the Applications > Internet system drop-down
